Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in a slum Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. She quit the school she was attending after only two years to pursue the profession of acting. The path she chose was filled with difficulties. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to find opportunities in the stage. She then worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. It was there that she was able to earn a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She studied drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
